Descripción

Explore Mount Koya and its Buddhist monasteries for two days!

Mount Koya is in a remote area south of Osaka and is the cradle of Shingon Buddhism, a branch of Japanese Buddhism founded by the monk Kukai in the 9th century. This Buddhist branch's most important buildings were constructed on this sacred mountain, and they now form a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

At the summit of Koyasan, as the Japanese call it, you'll find numerous Buddhist temples and monasteries. This tour is a chance to learn all about these fascinating places of worship while enjoying the surrounding nature.

  • Day 1: departure from Osaka - visit to Mount Koya with overnight stay at the temple

On the first day, your guide will meet you at your hotel in Osaka and take you to Mount Koya by public transport. Leaving from Osaka's Namba station, the journey to the mountain's summit, which takes just over two hours, is by train, funicular and bus.
On arrival, you'll first pass through the Daimon Gateand then visit the buildings of the Danjo Garan temple complex, including the Konpon Daito pagoda.

After a lunch break (not included), you'll visit the Kongobuji temple, considered the heart of Mount Koya as well as Shingon Buddhism, before heading to your accommodation: a traditional shukubo lodging in a temple. You'll say goodbye to your guide after check-in, as you'll be free to explore the site on your own the next day.

Once in the temple, you'll enjoy an evening meal of shojin ryori, the monks' authentic vegetarian cuisine.

  • Day 2: Continue exploring Mount Koya - return to Osaka

After a night spent on a futon in a traditional and spiritual setting, you can attend the monks' morning prayers and chants from 6am. After this musical wake-up call, a Japanese breakfast will be served at the shukubo. You can then continue to explore Mount Koya on your own and at your own pace.

At the end of the day, you'll return to Osaka on your own by the same means as the outward journey. (return tickets included)
