Discover the infamous Robben Island prison and meet the big white shark during your trip to Cape Town!

Departing Nelson Mandela Gateway at the V&A Waterfront of Cape Town, you'll hop on the ferry that will take you to Robben Island. You'll visit the worldwide famous prison that hosted Nelson Mandela for many years during the Apartheid. You will learn more about South African history.

The next day, you will be picked up in downtown Cape Town, and you will head to Gansbaai, a charming little fishing village about 200km off the coast of Cape Town. You will then meet the crew who will brief you on the protection of the marine ecosystem. You will then board the boat and head out to sea towards the sharks. You will dive (if you wish) in a cage to meet the great white shark, in complete safety.

  • Availability: Monday, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday (except exceptional dates)
  • When booking, we ask that you select on the calendar the date you wish to visit Robben Island. Your shark cage diving activity will take place on the next day
     
  • Information for Robben Island visit (Day 1):
  • You will receive your official ticket with the confirmation of your booking. The exact boarding time will be indicated on the ticket. You will need to be there at least 30 minutes before boarding
  • You will need to show a valid ID to board on the ferry to Robben Island
  • The visit to Robben Island is often sold out weeks in advance, so we advise you to book early
  • Departure time: usually 9am, 11am and 1pm, exact time will be indicated on your official ticket. It is not possible to know the time in advance, we ask that you do not book anything else on this day before you receive your official ticket
  • Duration: about 4h including 2 times half an hour ferry, guided bus tour on the island and visit of the museum
  • Departure point: Nelson Mandela Gateway at the V&A Waterfront, Cape Town
  • Access to Robben Island is subject to weather conditions. In case of cancellation, you will be offered an alternative date or a refund
  • Ticket included the return ferry, bus tour of the island, and access to the museum and temporary exhibitions
     
  • Information for the Shark cage diving (Day 2):
  • Departure time: usually 6am (will be confirmed on the day prior). Please arrive at the meeting point (hotel reception area or main meeting point) 30 minutes before the scheduled departure time
  • Duration: approx 11h, including approx 2h30 return transportation from Cape Town
  • Departure point: hotel pick-up is available from certain hotels in Cape Town. If your hotel is not on the list, you are asked to make your way to the main meeting point in the city centre (specific details will be sent to you upon booking)
  • This activity is completely safe and supervised by experienced professionals
  • Good physical condition is required for diving
  • Children under the age of 8 years cannot take part in this activity
  • Diving equipment will be provided but participants should bring a swimming suit
  • Cage diving is optional, you can decide to stay on the boat and observe the sharks from the boat
  • Activity subject to cancellation in the event of insufficient participants or bad weather conditions. In this case an alternative date or a refund will be proposed
  • Transport to Gansbaai by air-conditioned vehicle (sedan, mini-van or bus depending on number of participants)
  • Please note: breakfast will be served during this excursion. Other meals are not included in the tour price
